Farm bill extension offers little help for Kern growers
Jan 3, 2013 No Comments ›› Terry PhillipsThe Bakersfield Californian reported today that Kern County dairies benefited some but local growers of specialty crops such as grapes and nuts received little direct help from Congress’ vote this week to extend the 2008 Farm Bill until Sept. 30.
According to the newspaper, Rep. Kevin McCarthy…said he tried, unsuccessfully, to pressure the House’s Republican leadership to hold a vote on the bill.
McCarthy previously opposed passage of the bill in the 2011-2012 session of Congress, then predicted it would pass before the end of the year.
The extension came Tuesday night as part of a deal to avert the “fiscal cliff” array of tax increases and spending cuts. While it provided limited support that should prevent a spike in milk prices, the deal essentially gave Congress nine more months to come up with reforms some say are still needed.

Nov 16, 2012 No Comments ›› Terry PhillipsWith the final ballots being tallied in the General Election, we achieved another historic milestone: 50,955 votes! You should be proud of that amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to us all.
While winding down our campaign, we still have about $3,000 in financial obligations. If you are able to make one last contribution, please do so as soon as possible. We need to pay our vendors before the end of this month. As usual, you can donate online by clicking here:
Or via check payable to “Terry Phillips for Congress” and mailed to:
P.O. Box 12492
Bakersfield, CA 93389
Beyond that, we are putting campaign materials into storage and preparing for the next phase in our efforts to bring democracy back to the Central Valley. We’ll keep you informed of what comes next. Let’s keep the momentum going!
Meanwhile, be aware that today is the deadline for removing political yard signs. Feel free to contact us if you need someone to retrieve yours.
Thanks again for all you have done. Onward and upward!

Underdog candidate finds silver lining in social media
Nov 9, 2012 No Comments ›› Terry PhillipsKBAK Eyewitness News in Bakersfield has an article up about Terry Phillips. It includes a video interview.
Terry Phillips ran against incumbent Congressman Kevin McCarthy in District 23, in what may have seemed like a long shot.
“I think the conventional wisdom is that unless you have a party behind you, you really can’t get very many votes,” Phillip told Eyewitness News. “I got more votes than people with parties.”

Turn-out-the vote efforts in high gear this weekend
Nov 4, 2012 No Comments ›› Terry PhillipsFrom an article in the Bakersfield Californian:
Terry Phillips, who is running as a No Party Preference candidate to try to unseat Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, in the 23rd Congressional District, said voters are increasingly avoiding party labels when they refer to themselves.
“I’ve spoken to literally thousands of people in the last 12 months that have told me they consider themselves to be independent voters,” he said.
Phillips knows conventional wisdom doesn’t give him a chance of beating McCarthy, the third most-powerful Republican in the House of Representatives.
“I don’t think that’s anywhere near true. I’m planning on celebrating a victory on election night,” he said.
To make that plan a reality, Phillips said, he and his team are going to attack the last few days of the campaign aggressively.
“I am running to the bitter end. We’re continuing to wear out shoe leather and burn up the phone lines,” he said. “There are hundreds of people who are working every day to help me get elected.”

Fastest growing party is … no party According To The Bakersfield Californian
Nov 3, 2012 No Comments ›› Terry Phillips“Between October 2010 and October 2012, 10,388 additional voters in Kern County registered as No Party Preference, a jump larger than the 8,853 added to Democratic totals by an aggressive registration drive or the 217 new Republican voters.
Terry Phillips, a No Party Preference voter challenging McCarthy in the new 23rd District, sees those numbers as both good for him and a barometer for the future.
“In my lifetime, we are going to see people like me in the majority,” he said. “I think we are going to be the new majority.”

Article in the Mountain Enterprise today about the “Meet The Candidates” forum which Terry Phillips attended on Sunday, Oct. 28th.
“About 50 people arrived at Cuddy Hall on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. for a candidates forum, but third term U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R, Bakersfield) was not among them. McCarthy is the District 22 incumbent, but remapping has created an entirely new District 23, for which the House Majority Whip is running against unaffiliated independent candidate Terry Phillips, also of Bakersfield. “
